Blue eyes, matte skin, bare cheeks, copper lips and neutral nails held sway the catwalk at Capitale, where the designer showcased his American West-inspired collection.

Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux led a team of 15 artists to create the look for the 22 models to complement the designer’s inspiration, while famed manicurist Jin Soon Choi and her team polished their nails with a new color that was tested backstage.

In a press release, Pecheux said:

“When Derek showed me the fabrics that inspired his Fall 2010 collection – bold and muted tones mixed with earthy pigments including terracotta, greens and browns – I thought the make-up shades should be complimentary. So we chose a blend of bold blue shadows on the eyes, shimmering copper lips, and flawless, matte skin created with a light foundation — an on-trend beauty preview of what we will see for Fall 2010.”

Women carry an average of £57  ($94) -worth of cosmetics in their make-up bags. Britons are spending £1.1  ($1,8) billion a month on make-up, according to a new poll conducted by the cosmetics firm Avon that has surveyed more than 1.000 women.

The most essential purchase item was mascara with 62%, lipstick took a second place in “must-buy” list pointing 38%, foundation came with 37% of women saying they had to have it.

Cary Cooper, professor of psychology and health at Lancaster University, commented this women’s behavior saying that they spend money on cosmetics to cheer up, to feel in their normal spirit being in the economic turmoil.

“During the recession, many people will feel low because of financial difficulties and may be worried about their job or a partner’s job,” he said. “Many people buy luxuries in a time like this to make them feel better – whether that is chocolate or make-up. Women who feel low want to look better – they go for a haircut, have their nails done or buy new make up. It’s a common phenomenon.”

Also he added:

“It may make them feel better at the time but it’s what psychologists call a temporary palliative – it doesn’t solve the problem but helps them to feel better in the short term.”

The study has found that women aged between 16 and 24 carry £69 worth of make-up while 25 to 34-year-old have on average £71 of cosmetics. After this age women steadily spend less and less money from their budget counting £35 of product.
