Permanent makeup is the procedure that not every woman wants to undergo as the eyebrows look quite unnatural. What about hair transplant surgery?

In the past few years, hair transplant surgery has become advanced. Previously, it was almost impossible to copy the natural angle and growth of the eyebrow and lashes.

Now, one follicle can be implanted at a time, and surgeons are able to control the precise angle of the hair, which is very acute in eyebrows. This know-how can now be used to implant hairs into the eye lash line either.

Dr Bessam Farjo, who has been working on hair loss treatments and transplants since 1992, explains the procedure goes: a very thin strip of skin (6-7 cm long, and 4-5mm wide) is taken from the area of the scalp where the hair is softest. The surgeon then removes each hair from the piece of skin with a thin needle. Next, he makes up to 50 tiny incisions with a scalpel where the eyebrow should be, and, using a needle, inserts each hair follicle into the incisions.

The 30-year-old Mary Hornby from Sale in Greater Manchester, underwent an eyebrow transplant done by Dr Farjo. She began plucking her brows at just 14:

“I would over-pluck and be left with pencil-thin eyebrows, which at the time didn’t bother me. As I got older and wanted a fuller shape and I tried to grow them out. But repeated plucking had meant they had stopped growing.”

The operation last for three hours:

“It was completely painless and all done under local anaesthetic,” she says.

The happy patient also added:

“It took about six months for me to start seeing the results, but now I couldn’t be more thrilled. Dr Farjo has done an amazing job, easily surpassing my expectations and leaving me with beautiful, natural, full eyebrows.”

Eyelash transplants are more complicated, because of the delicate nature of the eyelid.

The prices for the procedures vary depending on the treatment required but in general the eyebrow transplantation costs around £3,500, and the eyelashes about £3,000.

The course of special procedures can help you to relax: warm bath with coniferous extract, lavender, and sea salt. The water shouldn’t be very hot, the time of the bath is 10-15 minutes 3 times per week.

If baths are contra-indicated to you, then you can take soothing herbal teas: valerian, mint, sweet-Mary and peony, or polysaturated acids. Polyvitamins with tocopherol (vitamin E) are great as well. Pure water with lemon goes well too.

Light peeling will bring freshness and radiance to your skin. Simple face masks can be done at home easily.

Oats scrub: for dry and normal skin.

Grind 1 tea spoon rolled oats, add 2 tbsp olive oil and apply the mask onto the skin. Rinse off with warm water.

Coffee scrub: for dry skin.

Mix up 1 tea spoon ground coffee with low-fat cream. Massage the face skin with the gruel. Then rinse off with warm water.

Do some masks after scrubbing and put on the cream matching your skin type.

Cut a lemon into two halves and stuck your nails into them for 10 minutes. Practice this nail mask in a day for two weeks.

Clean the eyelashes with a non-oily cleanser to remove make up and natural oils.

If you wear contact lens, take them off.

Then she should process them with special composition after the building-up completion. It’ll protect the eyelashes and make them glitter.

What time does the entire procedure take?

About 1-2 hours.

For how long is it possible to wear the build-ups?

It depends on your own natural ones. If they are strong and can carry the fake eyelashes for a long period of time, so that’s great! I mean, it’s a hard load for them to carry!

Some of my clients wear the artificial eyelashes for 2 weak, others – for several months, and there are those who wear them for years. Of course, they take them off for some time to let restoring and relaxing a bit.

What about the correction? Is that obligatory?

Probably, yes. If you want to prolong wearing them, then you need to undergo the correction procedure once per two weeks. It’s done predominantly because you loose some eyelashes gradually.

When you sleep or put on the turtleneck sweater or rub the eyes you provoke the mechanic disturbance and the lashes fall forming the gaps. So you need to put another one in turn of the lost. Everything will depend on your own neatness and care.

Should we treat our lashes after we remove the fakes?

Sure! Your cosmetologist should prescribe a treatment for your eyelashes after they are freed. I usually recommend the castor and burdock oils as they are wholesome for the skin, the roots and the eyelashes as well.

Can I remove the built-up eyelashes by myself?

I wouldn’t advise doing it because you risk pulling out your own ones together with the fakes. You’d better go to the specialist and let her take them off with the special liquid.

Can you give advice of how to keep them on longer?

Don’t use too oily eyelid creams or make up removers as they weaken the composition that holds the build-ups. Minimize the mechanic effect to them. Don’t stand under the pouring rain. In fact, take care of them. But if they cause the eyes watering, consult your cosmetologist.

In conclusion I can say that I wear the built-up eyelashes for the 4th week already. I’ve undergone 2 correction procedures. And the only thing I’m afraid of is that my eyes will look naked when I take them off because I got used to see my doll-eyelashes in the mirror. I don’t use mascara and it’s very convenient when I’m in a hurry.

Of course I’ve learnt to do neatly with them, sleep and put my clothes on carefully. I don’t know for how long I will care them but I brought my dream into life and there is no regret! Besides, long eyelashes are a Spring – Summer 2009 trend!

Curling lashes for a short period of time is easy even with the help of ordinary mascara but this effect doesn’t last and the next morning you’ll have to repeat the procedure. Besides, mascara can flow from water, or crumble and smear your under-eye area. Thus by evening time you might end up having almost colorless and, as a result, visually shorter lashes.

A nice decision for those who want to look great all day long, in water and hot weather, is an eyelash perm. This keeps the effect of curly lashes for two-three months.

Generally the procedure is similar to a usual hair perm. The result depends on what you originally have, though even the shortest and absolutely straight lashes will look the way you want. Tiny rods and special chemical solution are the only things you will need, and a good salon to perform the procedure of course, at least the first time.

Perm lash wave will not affect your daily life in any way. You will still be able to put on makeup, wash your face, have a bath, swim, or remove mascara with your favorite make up removal. Nothing will harm your lashes!

Your look will become much more expressive as the lashes seem to be thicker and more voluminous after a perm wave. The only drawback of using the procedure is the fact lashes get lighter, but you can always apply your mascara! Or go to a salon again and dye them black.

Don’t be scared of experimenting. There are lots of women who repeat this procedure again and again since it is very effective and the result is perfect. It is worth trying!
