Taylor Lautner for Men’s Health December 2009

The star of the second installment of the Twilight Saga New Moon – Taylor Lautner, who plays the role of werewolf Jacob Black on the movie is on the cover of Men’s Health December 2009 issue. And unfortunately, he’s with the shirt on.

In an interview for the mag the 17-year-old actor said that he worked out so much to gain muscle for New Moon that he wound up losing weight.

“I was exercising so hard that I began to lose weight.”

Being the Men’s Health’s youngest cover model, Taylor gained 30 pounds to play the hulking werewolf Jacob Black in the blockbuster vampire flick Twilight.

“My character continues to grow, so I’d like to pack on at least a few more lean pounds,” says Lautner, who worked out and ate nonstop to dramatically transform his body.

The New Moon director Chris Weitz:

“People have seen [Taylor's] body, and it’s a shocker because it’s hard to believe that anyone can be quite so carved. But he actually delivers a really great performance. He wasn’t just exercising all day. He was also reading the book quite a lot.”

The athletic Lautner, who’s a former junior martial arts champ, had to eat some 3,200 calories a day at one point to bulk up.

“The actual getting into the gym and working out process was easier, but the eating was harder,” Taylor recounts. “I had to eat every two hours. At one point, my trainer said, ‘Put anything in your mouth. Go to McDonald’s, get the biggest shake possible. I just need to get calories in you.’ Because my body fat at the time was only, like, 7.5%.”

Lautner’s charming co-star Kristen Stewart, says all the hard work paid off:

“He has literally become a different person,” she said. “He’s just grown up.”
