Different Detox Systems and Their Dark Sides
Detox usually refers to detoxication process, so called cleansing of the organism. There are several methods for this procedure, including the chemical ones, however today we are going to focus on different detox systems and see the dark side of this popular method of dieting.
Healthy Detoxication Plan
Detox diets are so various, that there is no distinct one, where you can just point at and say this is the only right one! However, there are several methods which will help you cleanse your body. As detox systems are usually very harsh, it is not advised to follow them for a long time.
The most severe of the detoxication plans is of course pure fasting, which is a process when you consume only water, and some juices. Fasting is considered highly dangerous if it lasts longer than certain amount of time, which is defined by culture or a person. Fasting is also performed by religious communities for purpose of purification of the soul.
Another method of detox process is the colon cleansing. This one can be performed in different ways, one of the simplest being the use of laxatives and with a help of an aenima. However, this can also be quite dangerous if performed incorrectly. Be careful when thinking of taking the laxatives, and it is best if you talk about that with your physician.
There are also commercially popularized versions of detox plans, such as Master cleanse. This method was developed by Stanley Burroughs in his book “The Master Cleanse”. The system involves eating fruits and vegetables and certain other techniques.
However, despite their growing popularity, detox systems have not been scientifically proven to be effective. As mentioned by Frank Sacks, MD, a leading epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health:
“There is no basis in human biology that indicates we need fasting or any other detox formula to detoxify the body because we have our own internal organs and immune system that take care of excreting toxins.”
So, considering this, you might be questioning whether or not this detox plans are needed at all! Moreover, as data shows, these detox methods are a temporary solutions to permanent problems. The weight that you could lose might come back as soon as you drop off a detox plan. Because of the slow metabolism, you get back all the weight you had, plus the extra pounds would add up. So, although brief periods of detoxing might be actually beneficial, the long painful detox plans are quite harmful. So, when choosing healthy diets – consider your options again, and really think if you need this kind of cleansing.
