Only people with uneven teeth can understand how this device is important.
The new invention called Celerect promises to halve the time corrective braces need to be worn due to vibration.
The vibrating device placed into the mouth for a few minutes each day speeds up bone growth around the base of the tooth this way helping to anchor the tooth in its new position.
According to statistics around 8 per cent of 12-year-olds and 14 per cent of 15-year-olds have to wear braces to correct misaligned teeth or tooth overcrowding. Besides, the number of adults wearing braces is increasing.
Braces really help to make the teeth look better. This is how they work. The teeth are held in place in the jawbone by the periodontal ligament, a series of connective tissues around the root of each tooth. Braces push and compress this periodontal ligament – this loosens the teeth and, as time passes, stimulates new bone to grow, supporting the teeth in their new position.
Braces are efficient, but this process usually takes a long time – two years on average. And costs might also go up to thousands.
The Celerect device makes this process faster by gently vibrating the teeth. The work of the device is based on the principle that bone responds more quickly to a vibrating force than to a constant one. This speeds up the natural absorption of old bone and the depositing of new bone cells (a bone remodelling process).
Similar vibrating technology is already used to treat osteoporosis and heal some types of bone fracture.
The Celerect is a plastic device that looks similar to a gumshield. It has to be worn for up to 20 minutes a day clamped between the teeth. The device should be attached to a small lightweight tube that hangs from the mouth and contains a battery and a small motor to create the vibrations.
The experts say the vibration is nearly unnoticeable and feels rather comfortable but still some users tell it tickles slightly. However, this doesn’t bother the patients to carry out most of their routine daily tasks.
The total treatment time required to realign teeth is cut 40 to 60 per cent when using the device.
Traditional orthodontic treatment requires an average of 24 months, so the possibility of shortening this will be welcomed by both patients and clinicians,’ says Dr Jeryl English at the University of Texas.
The device will start selling in the UK this September.
I think it’s a great invention since there are so many people with lots of hang-ups about their teeth. Hope the device is really as effective as researchers say!
