We have mentioned oatmeal couple of times as a natural beauty remedy for skin. But today we are going to reveal oat‘s beauty secrets and benefits for your health. So what is oat? Oat (Avena sativa) is a type of grain. Oat seeds are used by people as food and animal fodder. Oat is used to make porridge and oatmeal cereal. There are numerous health benefits of oat including healthy heart, weight loss, diabetes and cancer prevention. But oat or oatmeal can also be used as a beauty product or remedy.
Oat for Your Health
As we said oat has many health benefits. It prevents the absorption of ‘bad cholesterol’ without lowering the good one. It also helps reducing high blood pressure that is bad for heart. Thus oat helps prevent heart disease and complications.
Consisting of half insoluble fiber oat helps regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation helping your digestive system work properly. Oat is also dietary so it is great for those attempting to lose weight. It gives the satiety for a long time and fills you with energy.
Oat is proven to prevent type 2 diabetes maintaining stable level of blood sugar. Besides whole grains help prevent breast cancer especially in combination with fruit.
Oat as Beauty Remedy
Oat is a great remedy for irritated or dry skin. Having skin-soothing properties crushed oat seeds can be used as scrub, cleanser, mask and more. Here are some basic recipes with oat:
Grind oat in a coffee grinder, store in an airproof container. Use daily taking a handful of ground oat and soaking it in a little amount of warm water to make a paste. Use as regular cleanser and rinse with warm or cool water. You can then apply some moisturizer but oat itself is great at hydrating skin.
- 2 Tbsp. ground oats
- 2 tsp. brown sugar
- 1 tsp. lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp. aloe vera
Mixing all the ingredients together should give a paste which is applied to the damp skin. Massage your face mildly avoiding sensitive skin around the eyes. Rinse with tepid water.
- Half of ripe banana
- 2 Tbsp. ground oats
- 2 Tbsp. whole wheat flour
- pinch nutmeg
- milk or cream
Mix the ingredients to get smooth paste and apply to clean face for 5-10 minutes. Your skin will be soft and oat will sooth any irritation.
- ½ cup rolled oats
- ¼ cup powdered milk
- 2 Tbsp. honey
Put all ingredients in a natural fabric sack and hang under the faucet while your bath is filling with water. The water flow will spread the ingredients through the bath and make a great soothing treatment right at your home.
