How To Choose Nail Shape
Nail shape is an important part of the manicure and nail design. Some shapes are more practical than the others. And some shapes suit certain fingers better than others. Before choosing a nail shape study your hands and fingers. Pay attention to the nail bed and the nail moon shape. Choosing the moon or nail bed shape of your fingers as a nail tip shape might work just great.
Tips on Choosing Nail Shape:
- Oval shape is great for wide short fingers with wide nails.
- Round shape suits short nails ensuring their strength against breakage.
- Square nails suit long narrow fingers. These look better in a slightly longer version and are considered strong.
- Pointed nails add length to small fingers. May be not very practical in longer versions.
- Squoval nail shape is something between the square and oval shapes.
Oval nails are considered weak since there is little support to the nail so it can break easier than the square or short round nails. Squoval shape is stronger than oval, it also softens the square shape. Oval and pointed shapes help elongate the short nail.
When choosing a nail shape also pay attention to the strength of your nails. If they break easily opt for straight sided nail shapes as these will strengthen the nail reducing the chance of breakage. If the nails are naturally strong but have become weak make sure to find out the reason. A balanced healthy diet is important in making nails strong.
How to create oval nail shape:
Start filing the sides of the nail to give them a straight form. File only in one direction to avoid nail damage. To give the nail an oval shape from the side toward the tip of the nail in a rounded motion to create an oval shape. Check the shape in process to make sure the shape is even.
How to create square nail shape:
Even out the sides of the nail with file. Again file in one direction only. Then file the free edge till it’s straight and the nail has a square shape. Round the corners of the nails with a file a bit so that they are not to sharp. To soften a square shape round the corners a bit more. To achieve a squoval nail shape file the sides till they are even and straight and then round up the nail from the corners leaving them more or less square.
How to create round nail shape:
Let the nail grow a little before rounding it with a file in one direction. Start from side of the nail in a rounded motion to smooth out the edges. Check the shape in the process as too much filing can give an uneven shape to the nail.
How to create pointed nail shape:
This one makes nail very weak as the sides are filed to the middle of the tip of the nail. The nail doesn’t have much support so it is prone for easy breakage. Though the pointed nails have a certain plus as they add length to the nails.
